reactivity series experiment practical

The reactivity series is also known as the activity series of metals. Students will investigate competition reactions of metals and determine a reactivity series of the four metals used. The colour of iron sulphate solution is green. Procedure 19. Copper turnings were added to colourless salt solution. Non-metals in the reactivity series It is useful to place carbon and hydrogen into the reactivity series because these elements can be used to extract metals. Al is able to displace Fe, Cu and Zn from their salt solutions, therefore Al is most reactive. 12. (a) yellow and green It can be done as a demonstration or as a class experiment. Solutions of FeSO4, ZnSO4, CuSO4 and Al2(SO4)3 solutions were separately taken in four test tubes and some iron nails were placed in each of the solutions. Take FeSO4 (aq) solution in each test tube. > If a less reactive metal is added to a more reactive metal salt solution then there will be no reaction. 18. These metals cannot displace hydrogen from acids and water. You can also download. Question 10: (c) the copper strip became thicker (d) R displaces Q. (d) Iron spoon will not show any change. The water loses oxygen (is reduced). (a) light green to blue (c) light green to blue Conclusion: Al, Zn and Fe metals are more reactive than Cu. Question 3: Al > Zn > Fe > Cu. Reactions of metals with water and acids can be used to arrange metal elements in Which one of the two metals is more reactive? Green iron II sulphate is formed. (d) Al2(SO4)3(aq.) 3. > Metals: The atoms of metal will always lose electrons to form positive ions called cations. (b) Glass container will get cracks. Due to the displacement reaction the blue colour of copper sulphate changes to green colour of iron sulphate. (c) white (d) green. Question 11: When this layer is removed, the observations are more reliable. ZnSO4 solution in each test tube. On adding iron strip in copper sulphate solution, the reaction takes long time, to make it happen fast we can: After 10 minutes it was observed that the colourless solution turned to a coloured solution and a shiny metal deposition appears. (a) II, III (b) I, III (c) Test tube with ZnSO4 solution If the atom readily loses electron at room temperature it is said to be reactive metal than the metal whose atom does not readily lose electron at the room temperature. Log in. (a) ZnSO4(aq.) 1. Take test tubes A, B, C, and D, clean them. Question 3: in water, the colour of the solution obtained would be: Answer: Adding sodium chloride causes a vigorous displacement reaction to occur. > Non-Metals: The atoms of non-metals gains or shares electrons to form negative ions called anions, the atoms of non-metals if readily gains electrons it is said to be more reactive. After a few minutes, it would be observed that the colour of A + BX —> AX + B 19. Answer: Question 1: The iron nail reacts with copper sulphate displace copper and form iron sulphate . (b) add more copper sulphate solution (b) The final solution becomes colourless. Building the reactivity series During a reaction, metals lose electrons to form positive ions. What happens when A1 metal is added to copper sulphate solution? Question 4: Practical applications of the series are prediction of double displacement reactions involving two metals and the extraction of metals from their ores. A more reactive metal can displace a less reactive metal from its salt solution or compounds. Whereas zinc is more reactive than iron and hence it can react with iron sulphate. Clean the metals by rubbing them with a piece of sand paper before dipping them in the salt solutions. Copper is less reactive than iron and cannot react with iron sulphate. (a) colourless to blue What metal is the least reactive? I will react each metal (Mg, Fe and Cu) with the salt solutions of Mg, Fe and Cu. A more reactive metal displaces (pushes out) a less reactive metal from its compound. A student took four test tubes containing solutions of different colours marked I, II, III, and IV as shown below. 1. (c) Equilibrium is seen. Answer: Use very little amount of saturated solution of copper sulphate, aluminium sulphate, iron sulphate and zinc sulphate. Iron metal reacts with copper sulphate solution to displace copper and form iron sulphate that is green in colour. Name any two metals that are more reactive than iron. Two beakers A and B contain Iron (II) sulphate solution. Question 1: (c) solution of ZnSO4 and Al2(SO4)3 only changed. Black residue would be obtained in test tubes: When an aluminium strip is kept immersed in freshly prepared ferrous sulphate solution taken in a test tube, the change observed is 20. zinc rod in each solution and leaving it undisturbed for two hours, they noted the colour of each solution again. (c) heat zinc and copper strips. Students work in This is because its protective aluminium oxide layer makes it appear to be less reactive than it really is. (b) R is removed from the compound and exists freely. What is the right observation? (d) all the above are correct. Answer: Mg > Al > Zn > Fe > Cu. Conclusion: Al metal is not displaced by any of the given metals i.e. 14. (c) I, II, III (d) II, III, IV. Iron + Zinc sulphate —> No reaction. Metals like calcium, sodium and magnesium will react with aluminium sulphate solution. calcium + water ==> calcium hydroxide + hydrogen. Questions based on Procedural and Manipulative Skills We can use the reactivity series to make predictions about the reactions of metals. solution, the time required for the colour of the solution to change from blue to green will be less if: Principle: The most reactive metal will displace the less reactive metal. The test tubes containing copper sulphate solution and ferrous sulphate solution could be the tubes: 31. Students add each metal to acid and record observations as to whether they react. (b) Cu + FeSO4 As Zn and Al can displace Fe from its salt solution hence, Zn and A1 are more reactive than Fe but Cu is less reactive than Fe. (d) Mg is more reactive than Zn. (d) Zinc salt solutions are colourless. > Reaction with Al2(SO4)3 solution: Metals lying below hydrogen in reactivity series are less reactive than hydrogen. He would find the formation of solid deposition on What is displacement reaction? Therefore, these metals can displace hydrogen from its compounds like acids and water. (b) solution of ZnSO4, CuSO4 and Al2(SO4)3 changed and that of FeSO4 did not change. 26. Which of the following reaction will take place? Answer: (c) P displaces Q (c) Cu salt is blue coloured. A few pieces of iron filings were then added to both the solutions.
